Drivers Ed F&Q

North Sanpete High School Driver’s Ed. Frequently Asked Questions:

WHAT is the first step to getting a license?

  • Get your Learner’s Permit when you turn 15 years old. The learners permit test is available at school on Wednesday’s during Flex, however keep in mind, there are times when we will not be able to provide the test, (due to assemblies, teacher absence, etc.). It is NOT offered here at NSHS after school or during the summer. However, this test is also available at any Utah Driver’s License Division office, (DLD).

HOW do I study for the Learner’s Permit Test?

  • A free study guide is available at any DLD office, but even more convenient than that, you can google “Utah Driver Handbook” and find it online for free as well. This book is your best resource to study for the test. It is not uncommon for students to attempt the Learner’s Permit test without studying and not pass. This is NOT advised. Repeated attempts without studying will not work either. Students cannot “learn” the test as they will never get the same test twice, it is always different. Good old-fashioned reading and studying is your best plan of action!

WHEN do I take a driver’s ed. class?

  • When you pass the learners permit test and have been issued a permit, you can sign up for a class, (you must have a learner’s permit before you can take a class). Students are STRONGLY encouraged to take and complete a driver’s ed class at least 4 months BEFORE their 16th birthday. After completing a class, it will take at least 3 months before being scheduled to drive with an instructor. By completing a class as early as we advise, this 3 month wait period will not be an issue with getting a license on time. If a student takes a class later than our suggestion, they will  NOT get their license on time

  • Please also note that we drive the most eligible students first. Though we state that

students will drive about 3 months after completing a class, it could be a longer wait than 3 months if the student is younger and has more time to practice with a parent before turning 16. We will use this time to try and drive older students first, but will never delay younger students who follow our timeline so long that it negatively affects them in getting their license on time.

WHEN are classes offered?

  • There are at least 4 classes throughout the school year and one summer class. At our discretion, we might add 1-2 additional classes during the school year as needed. Classes are about a month long, every other month, beginning in September. Most of these classes will be early morning classes beginning at 6:30 AM. On occasion, we might have an after-school class as needed, but this is an exception to the usual early morning class and not guaranteed.  Please note: We reserve the right to offer our in-person classes to NSHS students first. If there are available seats after NSHS students sign up, then we can offer opportunities to other students in the district such as home school students, Wasatch Academy students, etc..

IS there an online class option?

  • Yes. But please be aware that North Sanpete has no affiliation with any online option. We do not own, run, or manage any online driver’s ed programs. If you choose an online option, please understand that any issues or concerns that may arise with an online course will need to be addressed with the online provider. North Sanpete will not be able to provide answers or solutions to things pertaining to the online course.
  • This online course is found at: www.seschools.org

HOW much does Driver’s Ed. cost?

  • If you do everything through NSHS, the fee is currently $100. If you choose to take the class online, you still pay $100 to drive through us, but also pay for the online course, which is currently a $50 fee.

CAN I be added to the driving list before I complete a driver’s ed course?

  • No.

OKAY, I have my learner’s permit, I have completed a driver’s ed class either in person, or online, now what?

  • If you completed a class online, you will need to inform Mr. Hafen that you finished. The online provider does NOT reach out to the school and inform us of anything. If you take the class in person, you simply wait until one of our driver’s ed instructors reaches out to you to schedule your driving. Remember, it will take at least 3 months AFTER you complete a class, before you are contacted & scheduled for your driving time with an instructor. If you want your license by your 16th Bday, you MUST complete a class at least 4 months before turning 16.

WHAT happens if I am unable to drive when my instructor wants me to?

  • Students are expected to arrange their schedule to meet the instructor’s schedule, not the instructor needing to meet the students’ schedule. We have patient, kind, and accommodating instructors, but we do not require them to drive students based on the scheduling expectations of students or parents. If students cannot arrange to drive when the instructor can work with them, the instructor will move on with his list of students and drive those who can drive with him. Students unable to drive when expected will then be delayed as we work with drivers who can drive. It will be the responsibility of the student to reach out and let his/her driver know when they have a more accommodating schedule. Please be aware however, that you will now be waiting behind other drivers. In short, not being able to drive when your instructor contacts you will most likely delay the time it takes for you to get your license. Issues with driving schedules most often occur with students involved in extracurricular activities at North Sanpete. If you are participating in sports or other extra-curricular activities, please take all this into consideration when you decide when and how to complete the driver’s ed experience through NSHS.

DO I have to participate in a Zero Fatalities presentation before I can get my license?

  • If you want to complete driver’s ed through North Sanpete, then YES. This includes students who choose the online option but want to drive through us. Also, at least one Parent or Guardian MUST participate in that Zero Fatalities presentation too.

I have now competed EVERYTHING, (permit, class, driving etc.) Now What?

  • Congratulations! Please follow up with Mr. Hafen to ensure that we have ALL your information recorded and on file BEFORE you attempt to go get your license. By following up with Mr. Hafen, you might save yourself a wasted trip and frustration if it turns out the DLD doesn’t have everything on file to award you your license. Follow up with Mr. Hafen before you ever travel to a DLD office to get your license!

I’ve heard about consequences through NSHS if I drive on a learners permit without a parent or guardian, can you tell me more about this?

  • Don’t drive on a permit without a parent or guardian and you will be fine, it’s as simple as that. IF you choose to drive without a parent or guardian, you will not be allowed to complete drivers ed through NSHS. If you are already actively involved in NSHS’s driver’s ed. program and driving around without a parent or guardian, you will be dropped from our program and unable to complete driver’s ed through North Sanpete. In addition, we will report violators of this issue to law enforcement for further legal actions.

Student safety is a Top Priority for us, and it should be for you as well. Parents, PLEASE do not allow your unlicensed kids to drive without you in the car with them.

IF I have other questions about driver’s ed. through North Sanpete, who do I contact?

  • Please reach out to Jon Hafen in the Counseling Office at North Sanpete High School, office phone #: 462-2452, ext. 1717
